Long summer and mild winter make mosquitoes thrive.Diseases they have transferred are becoming increasingly common in Europe.A popular holiday country of the Germans is particularly badly affected.
Viral diseases that are transferred to mosquitoes are becoming increasingly common in Europe. This was announced by the European Center for Prevention and the Control of Diseases (ECDC).The ECDC warned that the infection with pathogens such as the West Nil or Chikungunya virus could become a new reality in Europe.
The chikungunya virus transmitted by the Asian tiger mosquito shows a new record for the continent. So far, 27 outbreaks have been reported in Europe this year. For the first time, a case of Chikungunya fever, in which the local person was infected, became known in early July in Alsace, French.According to the EU authority, this is exceptional on this latitude and illustrates the fact that the transmission risk is spreading further north.
Longer summer and milder winter - ideal for mosquitoes
According to the ECDC report, 335 cases of locally transferred West Nile virus were reported in eight European countries by mid-August and 19 deaths. With 247 cases, Italy is the most affected country, followed by Greece (35 cases). The ECDC assumes that the number of infections will continue to increase and the transmissions will reach their climax in August or September.
The ECDC mentions climatic conditions that make the mosquitoes thrive: rising temperatures, longer summer periods, milder winter and changes in precipitation patterns as reasons for the increasing spread of diseases in Europe. The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes Albopictus) now occurs in 16 European countries, the species is also spreading in Germany.
The EU agency advises residents and visitors to the affected areas -especially older people, children and people with a weakened immune system -to protect themselves against mosquito bites.Accordingly, mosquito spray, clothing that covers the skin, as well as mosquito grids on the windows and nets over the beds are suitable.
