British justice prevents Portuguese hacker extradition to the USA
Published on September 19, 2025
A judge of the London Superior Court reversed the decision of the British Interior Ministry, which determined the extradition of a young Portuguese hacker to the United States, where he could face a possible 52 -year prison sentence by cybercrimes.
The magistrate concluded that 25-year-old Diogo Santos Coelho has been enticed by adults online since he was 14, which culminated in the creation of the RaidForums website, in which he had been “euros of euros from US companies,” said The Guardian this Friday.
Judge Linden argued that former Interior Minister James Cleverly should include “Rabbit's proximity to family and friends, his connection with their legal systems, his rights and probable results in criminal proceedings, as well as his rights to support in relation to his mental health, given that he was considered a victim of modern slavery”.This is because, he stressed, "the fact that the applicant was diagnosed with autism and other mental health problems, as well as the risk of suicide, are also an important part of the circumstances."
It is that, it is recalled, Portugal and the United States presented requests for extradition of the young man, who was classified as having a very high risk of suicide. He even confessed to fearing for life if he was detained in an American prison. However, last year, Cleverly considered that the request of the United States should prevail over that of Portugal.
The magistrate also pointed out that, in his view, Diogo Santos Coelho should have had the opportunity to submit allegations before the minister's decision, as well as the two countries. Now, the current interior minister, Shabana Mahmod, will have to reassess the case, allowing the young man to present him with the reasons why the Portuguese request must have priority.

From the perspective of Linden, the original decision was based on the wrong assumption that all victims of the crime were in the United States, when one of the main targets was the Portuguese state.
“After years of feeling imprisoned in a nightmare, this decision seems the first ray of light. I feel that I was properly heard, that the Superior Court analyzed the real facts of my case, recognized the injustice of the situation and gave me hope that my life does not have to be forever in this limbo,” reacted Diogo Santos Coelho, quoted by the same means.
He added: “My position has always been clear and has never changed: I agreed with extradition to Portugal, my home country, and I am fully prepared to face the judicial system there. I never tried to escape responsibility, just being treated with justice and humanity. This decision took a huge weight from my shoulders and I hope the interior minister now respects the court's clear decision and allows it to happen.”
Diogo Santos Coelho was arrested on January 31, 2022, at Gatwick, UK airport, when he was going to visit his mother. The young man is suspected of having created and managed the RaidForums platform, from which large amounts of data stolen online, such as credit card numbers, bank account data and passwords, in exchange for alleged cryptocurrency payments were traded.
