After hostility against Berlin presenter: Petition against hate started online

Published on September 18, 2025

After massive hostility against ZDF presenter Dunja Hayali (51), a petition is calling for a stronger crackdown on hate on social media. The online campaign “Stop anonymous internet hate!”already counted more than 117,000 signatures in the afternoon. The petition, which was started by moderator Ruth Moschner, advocates, among other things, “consistent and uncomplicated prosecution of hate comments and threats online” and calls for clear obligations for platforms. The background is a moderation by Berliner Hayali on the ZDF news program “heute-journal” after the assassination attempt on the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The journalist had said that the killed confidant of US President Donald Trump was an “extreme and extremely controversial influencer”.She also called Kirk a “radical religious conspiracy believer.” She also said: "The fact that there are now groups celebrating his death cannot be justified by anything. Not even by his often disgusting, racist, sexist and misanthropic statements."Afterwards she received numerous hate comments and death threats on social media. On Instagram, Hayali displayed some of these sometimes very drastically worded hostilities and said: "What always surprises me: condemning violence and then threatening someone else with violence. That still doesn't fit together."You can logically express your own opinion about her work, but not like this, she said with regard to such news. The petition is aimed at Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) and the head of Meta Germany, Tino Krause. The digital group Meta includes the platforms Facebook and Instagram. The letter says: "We show full solidarity with Dunja Hayali - and with everyone who opposes hatred. Silence is not an option."Hate is not an opinion. The influencer Louisa Dellert, singer Jennifer Weist and journalist Marc Raschke are listed as the first signatories.(dpa)
