According to an investigation, the high import duties that US President Donald Trump has imposed in the past few months, in particular, burden US consumers and foreign exporters."US companies only cover higher costs for less than a quarter (23 percent) of the products," said the credit insurer Allianz Trade on Friday."In 77 percent of cases, either foreign exporters or US consumers must shoulder the additional customs costs."
US importers therefore pay for breakfast cereals, sweets and dairy products."This should be due to the strong domestic competition and the price -sensitive consumers in these categories," said the trading experts. The exporters, on the other hand, would have reduced their sales prices, especially in animal feed, sugar, paper, snacks, frozen food and pasta, "and thus absorb the additional customs costs".
In most other products, the US consumers pay more-in many cases Allianz Trade also suspects "additional opportunistic pricing increases by US companies with a great price law"."Especially with coffee, drinks, consumer electronics, clothing, sporting goods, toys and jewelry, end consumer prices in the USA have increased more than the import costs," said Allianz expert Ano Kuhanathan.
Overall, according to Allianz Trade, the transfer of tariffs via industries and product division is "very unevenly distributed".In principle, however, wholesalers have an advantage and the prices often continue: "Due to the market structure, US wholesalers in particular should be able to enforce their higher margins longer and thus benefit twice," said Kuhanathan.
So far, effects on demand have hardly been observed, "but that should change with further price increases in the second half of the year," estimates the expert.According to the credit insurer's calculations, the growth of retail sales in the United States will slow down to just under two percent in the coming year.
US President Trump sparked a customs conflict with trading partners all over the world in early April. He announced high imports for numerous countries, but then lowered them to lead negotiations. For EU goods, for example, a set of 15 percent has been on almost all products since the beginning of August.
