Public Wi-Fi, a risk for your data
Published on August 16, 2025
Free networks of airports, hotels or cafes can become entry doors for computer hackers, but there are ways to avoid unpleasant surprises.Guillaume Nuel, an ethical hacker, explains the precautions to be taken on the show we talk about it.
This misadventure may already have arrived: you work with your laptop in a public place or on a trip, via public Wi-Fi.The connection seems bad.And then, later, the cybersecurity service of your employer contacts you to report to you that IT pirates have tried to infiltrate your computer and take control of it.The precise time and location of the attacks coincides with your brief connection on public Wi-Fi.
"A public Wi-Fi network is shared with a large number. If you can connect easily, it is possible that a hacker is also there. Nothing prevents him from having a coffee and making his little race in this way," explains Guillaume Nuel, ethical hacker at Almond and co-founder of the Computer Company Krak-insight in the show on August 13, 2025.The attacker, he will scan your computer to look at if you have not forgotten to update it and if there are flaws in your operating system.
What are the risks?"If the person manages to take control of your computer, they can do what they want there," replied Guillaume Nuel. The cybercriminal will first observe communications to determine the profile of the victim."Are you an influential person to potentially reach your employer? If in the end, you are not interesting enough, he can also quantify your personal data and ask you for a ransom to recover it."
Avoid public Wi-Fi
To protect yourself from attacks, the easiest solution is to avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks."They are a big danger that must be avoided. Nothing will prevent the pirate from intercepting your communications and seeing what you are doing on your bank."
Are there places to avoid?"All the big institutions will be targeted. As soon as it starts to become a little big and there can be money as a key, it will be interesting for the pirates. Sometimes they leave a small device there not far from the locals; when the pirates are gone, this device will always be there to connect to the network," specifies Guillaume Nuel.
Hold your computer and antivirus up to date
"You absolutely have to keep your computer up to date and have a good antivirus," explains Guillaume Nuel."Regarding smartphones, there are also update problems, but this is less problematic than for PCs. Telephones are just as affected, but by other types of attacks. The pirate can intercept your communications and spy on you, even without having entered your phone."
Use a VPN or connection sharing
"As a last resort, we could connect to public Wi-Fi, but we must not forget to use a VPN. It is a solution that allows you to secure your data to a secure output point, explains Guillaume Nuel. The best is to pass the PC through the connection of the phone. And if the phone goes through 4G or 5G, it's the top of the top."
