Berlin-With a new online email checker, users can check in the future whether your email provider meets central criteria for safe communication.Because emails are the most important gateway for hackers-whether it is about identity theft, espionage or the intersection of malice code.
Specifically, the email checker of the Federal Office for Information Technology (BSI) deals with the question of whether the respective provider has implemented two guidelines of the Federal Office for Information Technology (BSI) or actively works for their implementation. In these guidelines, the BSI has determined criteria, which should ensure safe transportation of emails and secure authentication. This should make it more difficult to read or change emails.
In addition, it is about recognizing email programs which sender has sent a message and whether his address may be fake. This should prevent criminals from pretending to be someone with whom the user is normally in contact.
Warning and protection as tasks of the BSI
"As a cyber security authority in Germany, it is our claim to not only sensitize the citizens to the dangers on the net, but to actively protect them," says BSI President Claudia Plattner.
Susanne Dehmel, member of the management of the Bitkom digital industry association, adds: "Only if emails are effectively secured are business processes and customer data protected and is strengthened trust in digital services."26 percent of companies in Germany have suffered damage caused by phishing in the past twelve months.
Bitkom, BSI and the Association of the Internet Economy (ECO) have now put a "Hall of Fame of E-Mail Safety" online with 150 companies that take part in the implementation of contemporary email security measures according to their criteria. This includes companies such as Commerzbank, but also organizations such as the Paderborn district craftsmanship. However, there are also companies that were strongly committed to email security but did not want to be listed in the "Hall of Fame", it said.
As the initiators of the campaign announced for secure emails, each professional mailbox reaches an average of 42 emails every day.90 percent of all cyber attacks come via email traffic.© German Press Agency
