Prevention: Switchblade amnesty: Offer hardly used in Hesse
Published on October 2, 2025
In Hesse, the amnesty for owners of illegal switchblades met with little response. This was the result of a dpa survey in municipalities and districts. For example, none of the banned knives have been reported in Frankfurt, Kassel, Wiesbaden or the Fulda district, as the respective authorities announced.
In Darmstadt, a person made use of the amnesty and handed in two knives, it was said. However, three illegal switchblades ended up at the Giessen district weapons authority.
Illegal switchblades could be handed in until October 1st
Until October 1st of this year, illegal switchblades could be handed in to the weapons authorities free of charge and without penalty. With the change to the weapons law in autumn 2024, significantly stricter rules apply to switchblades with blades that shoot out to the side.
In the future, possession will only be permitted under certain conditions, for example for rescue workers on duty.Switchblades, the blade of which shoots forward from the front of the handle into a lockable position with one hand at the push of a button or lever, were generally forbidden under the old legal situation.
Minister Poseck: Knives can quickly become weapons
Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck emphasized the dangers of knives.“The knife attacks in Mannheim, Solingen and Aschaffenburg have shown in a frightening way how quickly a knife can become a weapon,” said the CDU politician.“The switchblade is also one of them.It is classified as a prohibited weapon under the Weapons Act.Knives and weapons have no place in our inner cities; They should be banned from trams, trains and buses.”
Poseck referred to the preventive effect of weapons ban zones. In Hesse, according to the ministry, weapons ban zones have already been set up in Bad Hersfeld, Frankfurt, Fulda, Kassel, Limburg and Wiesbaden.Since the beginning of the year, more than 300 knives, including switchblades, have been confiscated there and in the weapons-prohibited zones on public transport.
