Asahi replies to the cyber attack by returning to work with paper and pen

Published on October 7, 2025

Last week a hacker attack paralyzed Asahi, but the world does not allow pauses. The solution is romantic and nostalgic. House Asahi is bogged down. The spanner in the works is virtual in nature, a hacker attack which caused the interruption of production in most of the factories distributed across Japan.Result: supply chain dismantled, Japan risks being left thirsty. This, however, is (relatively) old news. The above cyber attack dates back to September 29 – a century ago!-, and the world moves fast.Ergo: we have to patch things up, even if - explains the company itself - "there is currently no timetable for restoring" the system of orders, shipments and call center services. So what do we do? Asahi's response to the hacker attack There is irony in this story – bitter, of course, very bitter: but in fact it is there. In a report published last year, the brewing giant identified a cyber attack as one of the biggest business risks in the medium to short term, predicting that such an eventuality could cause business disruptions, create liquidity problems and damage the brand. In technical jargon: they screwed it up. The shelves remain empty, the throats dry.Family-Mart, one of Japan's largest convenience stores, told consumers it is "cooperating with Asahi to resume product sales," but because the brewery has temporarily suspended new orders and shipments, there is currently "no prospect of resumption."Apology messages are aplenty, and in this climate there are those who try traditional solutions. So let's have pen and paper. The catering, hospitality and large-scale retail sectors do not know the meaning of the word pause: the gears must move, and it doesn't matter if slowly.Asahi staff – we read on Reuters – have started visiting their customers in person with notebooks in tow, taking down orders by hand.Nostalgic, romantic, effective. Words of reassurance come from the upper levels - we will give ownership to outgoing shipments and we are processing orders (handwritten, in fact).Numbers in hand, Japan represents about half of the brewery's total sales: let's hope there isn't anyone with bad handwriting.
