This beer is under hacker attack.Empty shelves in the supermarket, closed factories

Published on October 6, 2025

An unprecedented hacker attack hit Asahi, a historic Japanese beer brand, forcing the company to close its plants for a week. The impact of the cyberattacco was devastating: in a few days, the stocks of Asahi Super Dry - the most popular beer throughout the Japanese territory - ended everywhere, leaving dry supermarkets, grocery stores, restaurants and Izakaya bar. Here's what's going on. Asahi under hacker attack Started on September 29, 2025, the Ransomware attack - a computer intrusion in which criminals block access to the data of a computer or a system and ask for a ransom to unlock them - has compromised the activities of orders, shipments and call center throughout Japan, forcing Asahi to suspend production in most of the 30 factories present in the Nipponic territory.Foreign plants were not affected by the attack. In a note published on the official website of Asahi, the company has communicated the developments of the story: "We immediately acted to contain and respond to the accident. We gave the maximum priority to the protection of critical data, including the personal information of our customers and commercial partners, and we promptly isolated the systems concerned to minimize the impact. Subsequent investigations have confirmed tracks that suggest a potential unauthorized transfer of data. We are conducting investigations to determine the nature and scope of the information that could have been the subject of non -authorized transfer". The timing scheduled for the reopening of the Asahi plants in Japan As for the orders and shipments of Asahi products, the Japanese company said "that guaranteeing the supply of products to customers has become our maximum priority and we have started the partial manual processing of orders and shipping". At the moment, the production has been reactivated in six breweries and five branded drinks of the brand. However, the factories are not yet fully operational: "Although at the moment we are not able to provide a precise timing for the restoration, our emergency response center is collaborating with computer security external experts to restore the system as quickly as possible". To limit the damage of the cyberattacco, the company has developed the orders of some drinks - very popular beyond beer also the whiskey Nikka, the Jurokucha tea, the Calpis milk drink and the oishiimizu mineral water - by filling out the list of purchases by hand and by going in person to deliver the products.Asahi will have to deal with the possible repercussions on profits. In fact, there have been numerous restaurants that, following the stop of the production of Super Dry beer, found themselves forced to move on to the main competition, represented by the Sapporo beer brand. Atsushi Katsuki, president and CEO of the Asahi group, apologized to the consumers of the brand in a press release on the official website of the company: "I sincerely apologize for the difficulties caused to our stakeholders with the recent interruption of the system. We are continuing our investigations to determine the nature and scope of the potential unauthorized transfer of data. We are doing everything possible to restore the system as quickly as possible, while implementing alternative measures to ensure the continuity of the supply of products to our customers. We appreciate your understanding and your support".
