Published on September 14, 2025

At the end of August, the system supplier, environmental data, which provides HR systems to the majority of Sweden's municipalities, was subjected to an extensive cyber attack. The stolen information included, among other things, social security numbers, address, telephone number and employment ID. Now the information has been posted on Darknet, says cyber security expert Karl Emil Nikka for SVT News. "The big risk is that the attacker is now starting to contact the private individuals and trying to trick them into publishing more information," he says. Affected personnel in large parts of Sweden The attack has hit both current and former employees in several large municipalities and regions, including the City of Stockholm, the City of Gothenburg, Linköping Municipality and Region Skåne.Linköping University and Ängelholm municipality have also confirmed that sensitive information leaked in connection with the intrusion. On Saturday, the hacker group DataCarry assumed responsibility for the cyberattack and threatened to publish the stolen material on Darknet already on Sunday, which they also did. People who work or have worked within the affected municipalities and the regions are now encouraged to be extra vigilant in contact from unknown senders. The great danger is that the attackers are trying to utilize the leaked information to deceive private individuals into further sensitive information, says Karl Emil Nikka. The goal may be to move into other systems.
